Leon Grass, the founding partner of Grass, Coffey & Scharlau, CPAs wasn't originally planning on being a CPA. In fact, Leon served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman between 1961 and 1965. He was active at the Bay of Pigs and narrowly missed being deployed to Vietnam. Upon leaving the service, he attended school earning a certification as a Registered Radiologic Technologist (X-Ray technician). This new position provided for Leon's young family while he attended the University of Missouri – St. Louis and after only 7 semesters, graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration majoring in Accountancy. Leon began his accounting career after graduation, received his CPA license in 1977, and started Leon E. Grass, CPA in 1980. Thirty-five years later, Grass, Coffey & Scharlau, CPAs is recognized as a leading, local accounting firm that provides superior service to its individual and business clients.

Leon finally retired after a long and rewarding career. He and his wife, Karen, are now permanent residents in northern Arizona. Leon keeps himself busy planting a botanical garden, fishing, relaxing and spend time with his 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
